This competition began as our humble way to pay tribute to the legendary Ansel Adams. This year we are taking it up a notch!
The concept and goal of “Stand in Ansel Adams Footsteps” remains to shoot in Black & White and emulate as close as you can the style, look and feel of his work. Open to any current GNPA member regardless of Primary (Home) chapter.

Ansel Adams was born on February 20, 1902 and died April 22, 1984. We picked February as a small nod to his birth month. Ansel Adams a major visionary figure in nature photography and wilderness preservation. Best known for his black-and-white landscape images of the great American Western Wildernesses.
Most of his work was great black and white landscapes vistas and finely focused textures, forms and details of nature. Remember, as he did…study and work your scene and consciously decide how and what you will photograph. Visualize your final image before clicking the shutter!
Several nearby locations could be used such as Stone Mountain, Arabia Mountain, Providence Canyon, Cloudland Park, Great Smoky Mountains, SE Atlantic coastline, the many waterfalls and wonderful locations of Georgia. Or, if you are lucky, some of those same locations so loved by Ansel.
With the NEW Exhibition portion this year, significant changes have been made to the complete PROSPECTUS. So, it is very important to read completely and follow not just the new rules, but all instructions and rules to qualify for the competition and subsequent exhibition.
OUR JUDGE: Mark Green an accomplished award-winning commercial photographer, who has traveled the US and world on assignments. His client list includes many Fortune 500 companies. The Art Directors Clubs of Houston and New York have recognized his work. For 6 years, Mark served on the American Society of Media Photographer's (ASMP) Board of Directors.
In 1976, as an 18-year-old, he was fortunate to attend a two-week workshop with Ansel Adams in Yosemite. “I knew at that time I wanted a life in the industry,” says Green. “I imagined myself as a landscape photographer like Ansel, as I have always loved the outdoors and nature, or perhaps a National Geographic photographer.”
He and his wife relocated to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2016, where he has returned to his early love: landscape and nature photography. Website at www.mgreen.com.
ENTRY FEES: For 1-3 entries $10.00, for 4-6 entries $16.00 and for 7-8 entries $20.00. Maximum 3 per category and TOTAL 8 maximum. No refunds of entry fees.
DIVISIONS: We will have 2 Divisions, Beginner photographers will NOT be competing against more experienced, Enthusiast photographers. NO professional photographers, please.
CATEGORIES: All Black/White (Monochrome) NO restrictions on when or where, 1) LANDSCAPE, 2) UP CLOSE & PERSONAL, 3) OPEN theme, a more creative category. NO restrictions on geographic locations or when taken.
